The Headstone Viaduct was built in 1863 to carry the Midland Railway across the River Wye, on the line between Buxton and Bakewell.

When it was built, it was seen as destroying the beauty of the dale. John Ruskin famously wrote,

"The valley is gone, and the Gods with it; and now, every fool in Buxton can be in Bakewell in half an hour, and every fool in Bakewell at Buxton; which you think a lucrative process of exchange - you Fools everywhere."

These were the apprentices cottages, built to house orphans brought up from London to work in the mill.

This building predates the current mill building by several years, the original mill having burned down in 1785.

The River Wye flows through the delightfully named Water-Cum-Jolly Dale, flanked by the limestone cliffs known as the Rubicon, where you can often see climbers tackling the many routes.

Cressbrook Mill was built in 1787 by Richard Arkwright, as a water powered cotton mill. The heyday of the mill was in the 19th Century, when it produced high quality cotton for lace making. Cotton spinning ceased here in 1965 and the mill closed in 1971, before being converted into apartments.
